Fitness and physical activity for school-age children ...

Updated May 19, 2014.

Short bursts of 15, 10 or even 5 minutes count for the number of days, so make sure that your child has many opportunities for physical activity before, during and after school.

Physical activities in the school

Academics are important, but find time for fitness. If children have the ability to run and play at recess, will be more (and move less) during class. Physical education (PE) provides a further opportunity at school to move while. It also makes children new sports and games, and represents a significant health habits.

But not all children sufficient recess and PE time:

  • Only 8% of elementary schools provide daily physical education.
  • Only nine states require elementary schools provide daily recess.

The National Association for Sport and Physical Education, among other groups, recommends at least 150 minutes per week physical education for elementary school students, which means 30 minutes per day on average. The association also encourages schools to plan daily rent for at least a period of 20 minutes. If your school does not meet these goals (many do not), ask the principal or school management, to account for changes and find ways to help your child to stay active outside of school hours.

Physical activities in the park, playground or pool

6 In the early age of seven elementary school, most children's physical coordination and attention, and the ability to understand the rules, you have to practice in organized sports. A few years later, between 10 and 12 years and handled the added pressure of the team competition.

Look for classes and recreational leagues, fitness emphasize strengthening the skills, fair play, and above all, fun. Ask. Your child for the sport that interests you, and give you the opportunity to try many different activities The two will be surprised what to do well and loves it in!

If your child loves team sports, try:

If your child prefers to take into account the individual activities:

Physical activities at home

Give the children all the time and space to play, as you can. Develop a variety of physical activities. The mixture helps children do not get bored and also helps to work many muscle groups. The emphasis on fun and action (without competition or "should").

Try these ideas for Family Fitness (hey, it could probably a little exercise too!)

  • Walking or Hiking (Find a track near you)
  • Cycling or skating
  • Jump rope or shoot a tire
  • Play ball or Frisbee
  • Outdoor games such as chatting, Mother May I, Red Light Green Light or
  • Within dance

Does your child get enough exercise?

Updated April 16, 2014th

Small children are not an extra boost to have to move their bodies busy, right? It seems so, but do not add the amount of physical activity for preschoolers often. End of 1970, about 5% of children aged 2-5 years were overweight. Recently, this figure rose to almost 14%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and prevention of disease. How to promote physical activity for preschoolers?

Recommend society health and physical education guidelines in the following format for young children.

Preschool (3-5 years) children should go:

  • At least 60 minutes per day, physical activities cumulatively
  • At least 60 minutes a day (and up to several hours) of unstructured physical activity
  • To do no more than 60 minutes at a time sedentary activities, unless they sleep

For small children (aged 12-36 months), are the same, except for structured physical activity to 30 minutes a day instead of 60 add up the recommendations.

The doctrine of the movement for preschoolers

What is the game "structured" means? Young children need help in learning motor skills. Must pass through several stages of development to learn to coordinate their movements efficiently, throwing, catching, and so on. "There is a misconception that if you take the children to play, learn" on their own, said Jackie Goodway, Ph.D., Associate Professor of motor development and elementary education in physical education from Ohio State University professor. "But it's like reading. If you do not teach them to give feedback to them and to practice and learning opportunities appropriate" are not to master these skills.

While formal classes can be wonderful, Goodway said that parents are the best models. To promote physical activity and motor development of the child, spend time actively playing with him. They give positive constructive feedback ("Kick a little slower next time" or "I love how was your food"). Provide toys and age-appropriate equipment, like a wiffle ball bat and a fat plastic instead of heavy wood. If your child is in a class of movement enrollment ensure that it is compatible with their level of development. Children at this age are not ready for team sports, and should not waste time waiting their turn on the bench. Instead of a ball and 10 children, for example, each child should have their own ball.

Promoting physical activity with preschoolers

To ensure that your child his hour a day (or more) physical game, try:

  • Day or hunting: For variety, hop, waddle, or dancing instead of running
  • Catch or kickball (experiment with balls of different sizes and textures)
  • Wash pool or other water sources, such as running a sprinkler system or the car
  • A tricycle or scooter
  • Crawl through a tunnel of cardboard box
  • Dance scarves or ribbons that make it even more exciting,
  • Internal obstacle: Creating an array of sofa cushions, rings (and jump off), aligned to form a tunnel or equilibrium chairs, etc.

Kickball games and variations

Updated 10 June 2014.

Kickball games are that are becoming increasingly popular in many areas of school games and adult leagues. Part of the appeal of kick is its simplicity. It is very easy to learn and play. But if you or your children ever tired to play a bit as usual, you can always change the rules or try one of the following options.

For most of them, as regularly kick, you must set the ground rules before the game: How many outlets for the team to come in retirement? Where is the foul territory (or only once)? How many rounds do you play? and so on.

Great base

Your children can play in the school gym, use of gym mats, the basics (hence the name "Big Base"). On your own, you can play outside if you so to have an area large enough the game. Use chalk or small orange cones mark their large bases.

The game is similar to a regular kick, except riders can gather in large bases. Each core can contain more than one player instead of a. You can even ask for runners circle the bases before two goals to two rounds, or turn to the left and to the right. Or alternatively play the variation "crazy style." Players go from home to first base and third base, then the second, then back on the disk.

Basketball football base

You need a basketball hoop for the game of kick (a park, in a gym or at home in the driveway). The kicker is subject tires and pitcher rolls the ball with her. Once it starts, it starts, the goals, while the defense gets the ball. Once a defensive player has the ball, tries to shoot a basket. If he leads, is kicker.

Kickball Online

Instead of dividing into two equal teams start the game with a single person. Everyone has to start the computer company. They are all fed in a row home. As soon as the first person in line kicks the ball, everyone starts (except the pitcher) basics. Must mark each base, but they can not stay on base. You have to keep around the bases to home plate and run.

As soon as the pitcher gets the ball, you can score points by throwing the ball runner. Any person who is outside is a gardener and start helping pitcher. If you prefer, you can use a rule that only the pitcher can really make a runner; Gardeners can not retrieve and throw the ball to the pitcher.

When the last person rounded up in the line of recordings marble, start again with a new node in the front of the line.

Non-Pitch

It's like T-Ball version of kickball. Instead of T, place the ball on the plate directly to your home. The game begins when the kicker kicks the ball on the ground. If the defensive team catches the ball in the air, which is an issue. But if not, or the ball rolls, gardeners have to get the ball. Then back towards home Your receiver capture and place on the plate. As soon as the ball hit the plate, any driver who is not on a base.

Activity Kickball

Play this classic game like kick, with one exception: Each base the driver performed a task or activity, to give. This could be something hopping on one foot, to say a tongue twister to do a push up.

You can make this change also extend the obligation of the defensive team to participate. After a fielder gets the ball, throwing to teammates at first base. He should do the same job as the driver has to do. Once you are ready, the ball to second base, where the second baseman second base business, launches and so on around the base.

Base

Streamline the field with this variant: Only a motherboard of the house. Set the base directly in front of home plate (where the usual second base). Try to score points, must the football out of the house at the base and drove back home. You can stay on the base when (not labeled), but it should work if your next team mate kicks.

Shock; what I learned from my children # 039

Updated September 22, 2014.

I consider myself very well informed about concussion (mild traumatic alias, TCL or brain injury). I've written a lot about TCL for this page. I attended conferences, dug in scientific research, and interviewed top experts.

, The shock of eyes my own son, however, remained open. This is what surprised me.

1 symptoms are elusive. After the incident, which ironically does not include sports my daughter mentioned headaches and nausea and fatigue first. I was not able to connect the dots, as we were on holiday, the weather was very hot, our routine was different, and so on. Even after the diagnosis, I was confused. Is violated because of the concussion of the head, or because they worry about missing school are because they are either not distracted by your normal activities?

Two other really matters. Already the crash happened while we were on vacation, and (see above), which was what had happened, we had a rhythm of work. On the third day after the incident, my daughter was too weak and ill to go and needs a wheelchair.

3 wound is really invisible. Leaving our daughter to do too much too soon after his concussion, because we do not realize that he still symptoms. And even with my knowledge of the shock, I was doubtful: Could it all with this blow to the head, a few weeks ago? Would have liked clearer that my son had, have made their symptoms. And I wish I had taken more seriously from the beginning.

4 of recovery is slow and frustrating. According to TBI was finally diagnosed by a physician assistant, start the recovery process for good. This means complete physical and cognitive rest, or, as the AP described it, the absolute boredom: It is very difficult for the patient and for the whole "If you're not completely bored you too." World around them! All I could do was sleep and embrace our dogs. After a few days some gentle activities are tolerated, including the kitchen and hear, read books.

5 Healthy habits can help. Using over-the-counter medications for the treatment of pain is acceptable after TBI, but this does not work for my son. We talked with them and concentrated in sleep (sleep much!), Hydration (plenty of water!), And nutritious food rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, spinach and flax seed. Of course, you should follow your doctor's advice about him; recommended dietary fatty fish.

6 school could surprise My daughter has three full days of school lost, then again a short time later. Lessons, one day, the price for the next morning in the prevention of noise and chaos of the dining room. Since the injury came at the beginning of the school year in a school that was new for both of us, I do not know what to expect when I called his repeated absences. But before we even medical excuse in hand, the school was very helpful. Obviously, and unfortunately the staff is used to treat traumatic brain injury in the student body.

I thought it was clever and conservative concussion before this incident. Well, if one of my children is hurt again, I'll much better prepared to respond to. I just hope that they do not have.
